Ashfield is a residential and commercial suburb located eight kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the Inner West Council. A multicultural and heritage-rich suburb, Ashfield features a dynamic commercial district adjacent to Ashfield railway station. The suburb is situated between Haberfield to the north and Hurlstone Park to the south.
The Wangal people were the original inhabitants of the land that makes up Ashfield today. Following European settlement, the first land grants in the area were made in 1793 and by the 1820s, all the land had been amalgamated into two large estates: Ashfield Park and Canterbury Estate. Ashfield Park was named by Robert Campbell, whose father was the laird of Ashfield in Scotland. The village of Ashfield was established in 1838 and grew in population greatly, particularly around the opening of the Sydney to Parramatta railway line in 1855. Ashfield was granted a municipal council in 1872 and by 1890 had a population of 11,000.
Ashfield train station is situated in the centre of the suburb, and Ashfield`s bustling commercial district radiates around it, with Ashfield Mall found on Liverpool Road. Ashfield Park, Pratten Park and Hammond Park are the suburb`s most significant green spaces.
