Auburn is a residential and commercial suburb located 16 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of Cumberland City Council. A diverse multicultural suburb, Auburn features a mixture of residential, commercial and industrial areas. The suburb`s thriving commercial district is concentrated around Auburn railway station. Auburn is situated between Rosehill to the north and Regents Park to the south.
The Wangal and Wategoro peoples were the original inhabitants of the area that makes up Auburn today. The district was an Aboriginal market place and ceremonial site prior to European settlement. In 1793, Auburn was established as the first free-agricultural settlement. The township of Auburn was established in the 1870s, with Auburn railway station opening in 1877. The suburb is named after "Sweet Auburn! Loveliest village of the plain" as described in Goldsmith`s poem `The Deserted Village`.
Auburn`s bustling commercial district is found adjacent to Auburn train station, in the suburb`s east. Small industrial precincts bookend the suburb`s northern and southern borders, while its central section is largely a residential area. A long expanse of green space lines Auburn`s western border, consisting of: Mona Park, Oriole Park, Webbs Avenue Playing Fields, Auburn Botanic Gardens (including the Japanese Garden) and Rosnay Golf Club.
