Bankstown is a commercial and residential suburb located 16 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The suburb features a notable central business district, adjacent to Bankstown train station. The suburb is an aviation industry hub, with Bankstown Airport found in the nearby suburb of Bankstown Aerodrome. Bankstown is situated between Yagoona and Greenacre to the north, and Padstow and Revesby to the south.
The Bediagal people were the original inhabitants of the area that forms Bankstown today. Prior to European settlement, Bankstown was largely occupied by Cumberland Planes Woodland and Turpentine Ironbark forest. A pioneer colony was established by Governor Hunter in 1795 and named Bank`s Town after Sir Joseph Banks, who travelled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770.
Bankstown`s expansive central business district is found in the centre of the suburb, adjacent to Bankstown train station. The CBD features a number of restaurants and retail stores, and contains Bankstown Central shopping centre. Paul Keating Park is situated between Bankstown CBD and TAFE NSW - Bankstown. Other notable green spaces are found in the suburb`s south, including Bankstown City Gardens and Bankstown City Sports Complex.
