Belmore is a residential and commercial suburb located 11 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. Belmore features a wide array of heritage-listed sites and period homes. The suburb`s commercial hub is based on Burwood Road, on either side of Belmore train station. Belmore is situated between Belfield to the north and Kingsgrove to the south.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Belmore today was originally known as Darkwater. The first land grants were made in 1810 and the district was initially used for market gardens and orchards. With the opening of Belmore railway station in 1895, the suburb was subdivided and named Belmore after the fourth Earl of Belmore, and Governor of NSW from 1868 to 1872. The Belmore town centre developed in the 1920s and incorporated some classic examples of art-deco architecture.
Belmore`s commercial strip is found on Burwood Road, in the suburb`s centre and on either side of Belmore train station. The sizeable Canterbury League Club is situated on Bridge Road nearby. Terry Lamb Reserve, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs Rugby League Football club and a number of sports fields are located in the suburb`s east.
