Burwood is a commercial and residential suburb located 10 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Burwood. The suburb has a rich history and many intact examples of Victorian and Federation style architecture. Its commercial district also features Burwood Chinatown. Burwood is situated between Concord to the north and Burwood Heights to the south.
The Wangal people were the original inhabitant of the area that makes up Burwood today. Following European settlement, Captain Thomas Rowley received one of the first land grants in the area in 1799 and named his estate Burwood Farm after Burwood Park in England. Subdivision took place in the 1830s and by 1855, Burwood Village was well established when Burwood railway station opened. In 1874, Burwood became a municipality.
Burwood thriving commercial district is largely based on Burwood Road, on either side of Burwood train station, in the suburb`s centre. Burwood Plaza shopping centre is found on the southern side of the train station, while Westfield Burwood is based on the northern side, adjacent to Burwood Park. Burwood Chinatown Laneway is located on Clarendon Place.
