Greenacre is a residential suburb located 17 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government areas of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown and the Municipality of Strathfield. Largely a residential area, Greenacre forms part of the Southwestern Sydney Region. The suburb is situated between Rookwood and Strathfield to the north, and Punchbowl and Mount Lewis to the south.
Following the European settlement of Australia, the area that makes up Greenacre today was originally known as East Bankstown. When the first roads were paved in the district, an acre of land was cleared for cultivation and became known as the `Green Acre`. In its infancy, Greenacre was largely an industrial area. In 1909, Greenacre Park Estate became the first subdivision in the suburb.
Mostly a residential suburb, Greenacre also features two shopping areas: a precinct on Waterloo Road in the suburb`s centre; and Chullora Marketplace, located in Greenacre`s north. A number of small parks are dotted throughout the suburb including Northcote Park, Allum Park, Gosling Park and Lockwood Park.
