Homebush is a residential and commercial suburb located 12 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Strathfield. The suburb is best known for sitting adjacent to Sydney Olympic Park, which hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics. Homebush became synonymous with Sydney Olympic Park, despite being a separate neighbouring suburb. The suburb is situated between Sydney Olympic Park to the north and Strathfield to the south.
Following the European settlement of Australia, the area that makes up Homebush today first formed part of "Liberty Plains" - the settlement in the Concord Plains area. When the Great Western Railway line was developed through the area, a station was named Homebush after the nearby Home Bush Estate, owned by the colony`s then assistant surgeon D`Arcy Wentworth. Homebush Municipality merged into Strathfield Municipality in 1947.
The suburb`s south and east are largely residential areas. Homebush Train Station is located in the suburb`s southeast. DFO Homebush shopping centre is found in the suburb`s north, adjacent to Sydney Olympic Park, along with Mason Park and Bressington Park. The expansive Sydney Markets, Sydney Flower Market and Paddy`s Markets Flemington are found adjacent to Homebush`s western border, in neighbouring Homebush West.
