Lidcombe is a residential and commercial suburb located 15 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government areas of Cumberland Council and the City of Parramatta. Lidcombe features residential, commercial and industrial districts within its borders. The suburb is situated between Sydney Olympic Park to the north and Chullora to the south. Lidcombe sits adjacent to Rookwood General Cemetery - the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere.
Following the European settlement of Australia, the area that makes up Lidcombe today was first known as Haslams Creek, and a railway station opened in the district in 1859. When the necropolis opened in 1867, it was known as Haslam`s Creek Cemetery, but was renamed Rookwood in 1876. Formerly a part of Rookwood, Lidcombe became its own suburb in 1914, with local residents preferring not to be associated with a cemetery. The suburb`s name is a portmanteau of Lidbury and Larcombe - after former mayors Henry John Larcombe and Frederick Lidbury.
The suburb`s main commercial precinct is found in its centre, adjacent to Lidcombe train station. Lidcombe also features an industrial precinct in its north. Rookwood General Cemetery is found adjacent to Lidcombe`s eastern border.
