Padstow is a residential and industrial suburb located 22 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. Padstow is the easternmost suburb in Greater Western Sydney and is situated between Bankstown to the north and Padstow Heights to the south. Salt Pan Creek is Padstow`s natural eastern border.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Padstow today was first known as Padstow Park Estate, after Padstow, a town in Cornwall, England. The area was originally a timber-getting and farming district. Padstow Park Post Office opened in 1927, and the suburb`s first school opened in 1929. The suburb`s railway station opened in 1931, and in 1939, the suburb`s name was officially changed from Padstow Park Estate to Padstow. The suburb`s residential development took place largely after WWII.
Padstow`s main shopping strip is found in the suburb`s centre, adjacent to Padstow train station. A long expanse of greenery fronts the suburb`s Salt Pan Creek foreshore in the east. A number of streets in Padstow have Egyptian and outer space themed names, including Arab Road, Cairo Avenue, Pyramid Avenue, Sphinx Street, Uranus Road, Mars Street and Neptune Street.
