Punchbowl is a residential suburb located 17 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The suburb is named after a circular valley and is situated between Bankstown to the north and Riverwood to the south. Largely a residential area, Punchbowl features a mix of Federation, Art Deco and modern homes.
Following the European settlement of Australia, an inn opened in the area that makes up Punchbowl today in 1830s called the Punch and Bowl. Punchbowl is named after a circular valley known as the Punch Bowl located in nearby Belfield. When a railway station opened in the district in 1909, a few kilometres from the Punch Bowl itself, the surrounding suburb became known as Punchbowl. In the 1920s and 1930s, Punchbowl was a well to do suburb with a number of theatres operating in it, including the 915-seat Punchbowl Astoria.
Punchbowl is largely a residential suburb, with a mix of 19th and 20th century architecture, including Federation and Art Deco styles, along with more modern homes. The suburb features a small shopping strip in its centre, adjacent to Punchbowl train station.
