Riverwood is a residential suburb located 18 kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government areas of the Georges River Council and the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The suburb sits on the upper reaches of Salt Pan Creek and is situated between Punchbowl to the north and Peakhurst to the south. Largely a residential suburb today, during WWII Riverwood was home to a notable United States army base hospital barracks.
Following the European settlement of Australia, the area that makes up Riverwood today was originally known as Herne Bay. The suburb`s railway station opened in 1931. During WWII the suburb was redeveloped to allow for the establishment of an army base hospital barracks for the United States Army. Following the war, the hospital barrack buildings were converted into public housing, but a number of streets in the suburb recall the American presence including Wyoming Place, Roosevelt Avenue, Truman Avenue and more. The suburb was named Riverwood in 1957.
Riverwood features a small shopping precinct in the suburb`s south, adjacent to Riverwood train station. Riverwood Park, Salt Pan Creek Reserve and a number of other green spaces are situated in the suburb`s west, adjacent to Salt Pan Creek.
