Strathfield is a residential and commercial suburb located 12 kilometres west of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government areas of the Municipality of Strathfield, the City of Canada Bay and the Municipality of Burwood. Strathfield is a historic and dynamic suburb with a thriving commercial district. The suburb is situated between Homebush to the north and Strathfield South to the south.
The original inhabitants of the area that makes up Strathfield today were the Wangal people. Following European settlement, land grants in the Strathfield area were made from 1793. Strathfield council was proclaimed in 1885 and a railway station in the suburb opened in the same year. Strathfield became a popular residential suburb in the late 19th and 20th centuries. In the latter decades of the 20th century, Strathfield`s commercial district prospered and Strathfield Plaza shopping centre opened in 1981.
Strathfield`s commercial district is concentrated in the suburb`s northeast, adjacent to Strathfield train station. While the suburb is largely a residential one, a number of educational institutions are dotted throughout the area including the Australian Catholic University, Santa Sabina College and Trinity Grammar. Strathfield Park, Freshwater Park and Hudson Park are the suburb`s most notable green spaces. Rookwood General Cemetery is found adjacent to Strathfield`s western border.
