Yagoona is a residential and commercial suburb located 20 kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. Yagoona is an aboriginal word meaning `now` or `today`. The first McDonald`s restaurant to open in Australia opened in Yagoona. The suburb is situated between Sefton to the north and Bankstown to the south.
The Bediagal people originally inhabited the area that makes up Yagoona today. Following European settlement, the district was first known as Irish town in the late 18th century, due to the area`s high concentration of Irish rebels. The suburb of Yagoona was created in 1927. The first McDonald`s restaurant in Australia opened in Yagoona in 1971, but closed in 1994. A new McDonald`s opened on the original store`s site in 2021, marking the franchise`s 50th anniversary celebrations in Australia.
Yagoona is largely a residential suburb. The suburb`s commercial district is found in its east, radiating around Yagoona train station. The suburb`s most notable green spaces include Graf Park, O`Neill Park and Middleton Park.
